The Best Cubic Zirconia Jewelry: Women’s Jewelry Choice

Everything that glitters is not gold or platinum – a saying very true as a metaphor to life. But when it comes to the gold or platinum in jewelry, everything that glitters is not always affordable or attractive. In today’s economy, not everyone can afford the sky rocketing cost of precious metals, when combined with precious stones like diamonds. For those whose budget is lower, there is a truly beautiful and affordable diamond jewelry alternative called cubic zirconia. Because higher quality cubic zirconia pieces are now available, “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” is not as true today as it used to be. Platinum cubic zirconia jewelry and gold cubic zirconia jewelry now puts diamond-like glamour and style within reach of every woman.

Natural mined diamonds are extremely costly. Additionally, the mining of diamonds is bad for both human rights and the environment. With growing awareness of “blood diamonds” or “conflict diamonds” that are mined and sold for financing violent activities like war and terrorism, it is only appropriate that both men and women jewelry shoppers make the ethical choice – cubic zirconia jewelry. High quality cubic zirconia is almost indistinguishable from real diamonds. So much so, even jewelers have a hard time telling them from mined diamonds. Cubic zirconia jewelry is available in a range of grades according to their quality. Grade 5A of cubic zirconia is the best on the market.

The best quality cubic zirconia gemstones are hand-cut, NOT machine cut. They are then polished to perfection and scrutinized visually. This results in only the best ones being used in luxury custom-made jewelry. Machine-cut CZ gems are used in lower quality mass produced CZ jewelry, but cheap costing CZ can also be cheap looking. Be careful with mass made CZ jewelry, you often get what you pay for. When buying platinum cubic zirconia or gold cubic zirconia jewelry, you definitely want something that will last, and look great. Look for only high quality CZ in custom made pieces rather than mass produced pieces.

Men who buy jewelry appreciate the savings of CZ. But women are also opting for gold cubic zirconia jewelry or platinum cubic zirconia jewelry. It’s not just because it costs less, but also because it is durable and beautiful and smart. CZ comes in a variety of colors, fashionable cuts and designs. This means a woman can mix and match her CZ earrings, CZ necklaces, CZ bracelets or CZ rings according to the color of her attire or personal style. What most women do like about the lower cost of gold or platinum CZ is that for the price of a single small diamond piece, you can easily purchase many pieces of fine CZ jewelry! When you buy fine quality CZ in gold or platinum, you can show it off to your friends with pride. When choosing the best cubic zirconia jewelry, it is not about being cheap; it is about being smart and practical. So when picking your next jewelry piece, choose high quality cubic zirconia!

Cubic Zirconia: More Perfect Than Diamonds

Although at one time cubic zirconia was looked down upon as a “fake” diamond, today the simulated stones are appreciated for their own characteristics and beauty. Still, many people do not have a thorough understanding of these synthetic gems. Here are answers to some common questions.

What is Cubic Zirconia?

Loose cubic zirconia (also called CZ stones) are lab created gems. Cubic zirconia is found in nature, but it is extremely rare and the chemical properties of natural cubic zirconia are slightly different than those of synthetic gems. The simulated stones are made from a powder that is heated to a very high temperature, and then cooled in a controlled environment so that flawless crystals form.

How are Cubic Zirconia Stones Different from Diamonds?

There are several differences, the most notable of which is that diamonds are found in nature whereas cubic zirconia used for jewelry is man-made. Diamonds rate 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness (the highest rating), whereas cubic zirconia is generally rated at 8.5 on the hardness scale. CZ stones are denser and thus heavier than diamonds. When it comes to quality, however, these synthetic gems leap ahead of the pack. Whereas most diamonds have what are called inclusions (flaws), the best cubic zirconia stones are flawless. Similarly, colorless diamonds are very rare, whereas the lab created gems are perfectly colorless (although color can be added during the manufacturing process).

Are all Cubic Zirconia Stones the Same Quality?

Like diamonds, loose cubic zirconia stones are rated according to quality. Cubic zirconia AAAAA are the best quality simulated stones, while CZ AAA are next, followed by the A-grade cubic zirconia.

Are Cubic Zirconia Stones Available in the Same Cuts as Diamonds?

Cubic zirconia stones are cut so that they have the same facets and proportions as diamonds. The most classic cut of both diamonds and CZ stones is the round brilliant, with 58 facets and the ability to reflect light. Stones with a marquis cut are typically twice as long as they are wide and have a point on each end. A pear shaped cut resembles a teardrop combines the faceted brilliant cut of a round stone with the elongated look of a marquis stone. Similarly, the oval cut has the sparkle of a round brilliant, but is oval rather than round. The octagon cut, also known as the emerald cut, has stepping stone facets that reflect light more subtly. A square cut is sometimes called a princess cut, and has pointed corners.

How is Loose Cubic Zirconia Used?

Jewelry makers buy loose cubic zirconia at wholesale prices, and use a variety of materials to transform the synthetic gems into beautiful accessories. CZ stones are used in engagement rings, wedding rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, necklaces, solitaire rings, and even ankle bracelets. Colored cubic zirconia is also used in a variety of fashion jewelry, including earrings and as side stones in rings. Settings are often made from 14-karat gold, 18-karat gold, sterling silver, or platinum.

A Cubic Zirconia Rainbow

Cubic Zirconia has long been recognized for its amazing ability to simulate diamonds. In fact, these lab created gems are more flawless than diamonds found in nature, and can be cut to refract light even more perfectly than real diamonds. For consumers, CZ stones are an eminently affordable alternative to diamonds.

Because of the simulated stones’ popularity, those who make jewelry – whether earrings, necklaces, rings, or pendants – are designing ever more beautiful settings for the synthetic gems. The low wholesale cost of loose cubic zirconia allows jewelry designers to create ever more elaborate pieces.

In addition to being able to buy loose cubic zirconia at wholesale or below wholesale prices, jewelry makers appreciate the dazzling array of colors and cuts that are available for CZ stones. For example, amethyst, violet, and lavender cubic zirconia are all shades of purple, while aqua and tanzanite are gorgeous shades of blue. Citrine and champagne are both in the yellow-gold range of colors, emerald and peridot are green, and garnet is a deep, rich red color.

The colors of these synthetic gems are obtained by adding an “impurity” to the CZ stones, such as a metal oxide. For example, erbium may be added to create a pink color, or neodymium might be added to create purple. Similarly, chromium can be added to make loose cubic zirconia stones green, and cerium may be added to create yellow, orange, and red lab created gems.

Of course, many jewelry makers and consumers prefer the brilliant clear cubic zirconia. Similar to diamonds, these white CZ stones are graded according to quality. Cubic zirconia AAAAA is the highest quality, followed by CZ AAA and cubic zirconia A.

Although the way a diamond cutter and polisher cuts a gem-quality diamond is in large part determined by the imperfections of the rough stone, those who manufacture loose cubic zirconia don’t face the same constraints. For that reason, the variety of cuts of CZ stones is remarkable, as it the beauty and brilliance of the cut stones.

Some cubic zirconia cuts very much resemble those of diamonds, while others are more unique. Loose cubic zirconia cuts include oval, round, heart, octagon, marquise, square, star, pear, and trillion.

When it comes to lab created gems, cubic zirconia is only the tip of the iceberg. In addition to synthetic diamonds, simulated blue sapphires, alexandrite, and tanzanite, all made from corundum, are also popular. Likewise, simulated stones like coral, emerald, garnet, lapis, and emerald have gained widespread acceptance among both jewelry makers and consumers.

With the exceptional quality of CZ stones, their low wholesale cost, and the incredible selection of colors and cuts, it’s easy to see why loose cubic zirconia is often the stone of choice for jewelry designers and consumers alike.

And purity, cubic zirconia is flawless whereas a diamond usually contains impurities and inclusions, but cubic zirconia is softer and more brittle than a diamond.
