Top Five Reasons eBay Sellers Fail
Avoid these Five Mistakes for a Successful eBay Business
Building an eBay business is in many ways similar to building any business. To be successful everything has to work: Marketing, Sales, Quality, Pricing, and Customer Service. Selling on eBay, however, has some unique features that differ from traditional retail businesses.
On eBay, a seller’s customer service reputation (Feedback Rating) is out in the open for everyone to see. Imagine, if every store in the shopping mall had a sign outside where customers wrote comments about their products and service. Would you stop to read the comments before entering the store? Negative feedback is the number one reason eBay sellers fail. A negative feedback rating, however, usually has its roots in other problems.
Here are the top five reasons why eBay businesses fail:
1. Poor Feedback Rating
New eBay sellers typically underrate the importance of quickly building a great feedback rating. I am amazed when I click on an auction description and see a seller with a feedback rating under “10.” How could this person know anything about selling on eBay.? Experienced eBay bidders are cautious of sellers with a feedback rating under 25 – 50. Admittedly, getting your first twenty-five feedback comments as a seller can be a long process. Don’t forget, feedback comments as a buyer count as well (although eBay does show the difference). Before you rush into selling on eBay, you need to get some experience buying. There is nothing better than putting yourself in your customer’s shoes.
I wouldn’t start to sell on eBay until you have completed a dozen or more purchases, paid for them promptly and received good feedback from your sellers. Don’t be afraid to ask the seller to post feedback in your payment email. Sellers like to be paid quickly. Sending payment by credit card or PayPal will build your feedback rating quickly as well.
When starting your eBay business, you should bend over backwards to provide exceptional service. Remember, you are fishing for compliments. When you have a positive feedback rating over “100″ bidders will look at your rating number and then make their decision on whether or not they like your product. If your feedback rating is less than a 100, people tend to actually look back through your comments and read them. There is a big difference between “Nice transaction — good seller” and “FIVE ***** SELLER, EXCELLENT PRODUCT- FAST SHIPPING” Whether you are a new seller, or a veteran eBayer, building excellent feedback comments should be a daily goal.
Poor shipping practices and poor communications between buyer and seller is the leading cause of negative feedback.
Make sure your first email to the successful bidder is clear, and complete. You should not only be polite, but be effusive in your congratulations. Remember: Some people shop on eBay for bargains, but most people shop on eBay for fun. Make the transaction a fun experience. Be personal. Don’t sound like a bureaucrat or a big corporation. Make the buyer feel good and close the sale by complimenting them on the great deal they made.
Make sure your payment instructions are clear and your shipping methods and charges are clearly spelled out (this should have been in your auction, but many people can’t remember). If a buyer wants to pay by credit card, suggest PayPal, or explain how to access your secure credit card server. If they want to use a check, explain how they can speed up the payment and delivery by using PayPal’s electronic check service. (eBay no longer allows payment by personal check unless a buyer is picking something up in person.
As the seller, you have the most to lose by negative feedback. It is only a question of time until you run into a difficult or irrational buyer. He or she may be rude, or unresponsive, or both. Once your feedback rating is secure in the high hundreds, you can afford to take a tough line and weather the negative feedback that inevitably follows. But while you are building your feedback rating, sometimes you just have to swallow hard and be extra diplomatic. I always give people the benefit of the doubt and try and work something out. I would rather lose a sale than risk negative feedback from an irresponsible person. If a buyer won’t complete the transaction, its better to report them to eBay, than to get into a feedback war. Once eBay determines they are a non-paying bidder, they will not be able to leave feedback against you.
To summarize, make your communications fast, friendly and complete and your feedback rating will soar!
2. Not Accepting PayPal Turns Away Bidders
Thousands of bidders worry about Internet fraud. So they want to pay with a credit card.
Setting up a merchant credit card account can cost between $195 to $425 in set-up fees and anywhere from 2.5% to 7.5% per transaction.
Fortunately, Paypal offers an elegant solution (paypal.com). There are no set-up fees and transaction costs are 2.2% or less. Here is an important tip: Some buyers don’t know what Paypal is, or how it works. Place a PayPal logo on all your auctions and a link to PayPal in emails to your successful bidders.
In your auction, place a line of text above the PayPal logo that says: “To pay with a credit card, click on the PayPal logo below.” Do the same in your email to winning bidders. Use a statement such as: “If you would like to pay by credit card, click on the link below to register and pay securely using PayPal.” Then place your PayPal referral link after your signature.
If you have a web site (most successful auction sellers do), instead of setting up a merchant credit card account, you can now use PayPal’s WebAccept to take credit card orders on your web site. Connect to PayPal’s “Web Tools” link, and type in the product, pricing and shipping info. Then copy/paste the html code onto your web page. You now have a credit card shopping cart for each individual product.
3. Weak Headlines and Poor Auction Descriptions Lose Bids
There are over seven million items listed on eBay every day. Your headline must stand out above the competition to attract bidders. A great headline should contain two key elements: “Key words” that are searchable, and “emotional words” designed to attract attention.
Over 60% of bidders find the item they are looking for by using the “Search” feature. Unless you use the key words bidders are looking for, you will miss many bids. For example, if someone collects Ferrari Formula 1 model cars, they will search “Ferrari” rather than “Formula 1″ or “model cars.” A search of Ferrari turns up 41 items, while “Formula 1″ turns up a few thousand items. A search of “Blue & White” will turn up thousands of listing in the pottery section, but a search for “Liberty Blue” (a specific type of blue & white pottery) turns up only a few hundred items.
Your headline should also include “emotional” words designed to attract a bidder’s attention. These words include: new, rare, unique, sexy, secret, unbelievable, super-value, etc. You should not call something “rare” if it is not. But, there are other adjectives that work well in headlines. Besides the emotional words you can use words such as exquisite, charming, wonderful, mint, perfect, clean, superb, etc. Just make sure you are accurate.
Once you catch the bidder’s attention with a great headline, you need to “sell” them with your item description. Too many bidders simply describe the item they are selling. Yes, it is important to completely and accurately describe the item, but too many sellers leave it at that. Take the time to “romance” your item. Sell the benefits.
Before writing the auction description, ask yourself: “Why would someone want to own the item you are selling.” If you are selling something you use, say so. Tell the potential bidder why you owned the item, how you used it, what benefits it brought you. Sell not just the features, but the benefits and the romance.
Here is an example:
“This Sterling Silver bracelet is five inches long set with zirconium stones that look just like diamonds.”
Now lets add some romance:
“This exquisite Italian Sterling Silver bracelet is set with five glimmering zirconium stones that sparkle like diamonds. The silver is finished to a high polish. It’s so bright, it looks like white gold. Whenever I wear this bracelet my friends ask: “Wow, are those real diamonds? Where did you get that bracelet?”
Your auction descriptions must also be complete. A clear photo is critical to the success of the auction, but remember, photos don’t always show all the details a bidder needs. If you are selling an antique, collectible or any used item, be sure to describe any and all flaws. The fastest way to build negative feedback is to over-describe the item, or over-promise performance.
4. Poor Images Can Turn Off Sellers
The saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” is never more true than with on-line auctions. Not having a photo of your item will greatly reduce your bids, and lead to unprofitable or unsuccessful auctions. Not only must you have a photograph of what you are selling, the photo must be accurate and revealing.
It is not necessary to be a professional photographer. Ebay bidders understand that most sellers are taking snapshots of the products they sell. But, your photo should be clear, and show the product as completely as possible. Here are some tips for good photos:
• If the size of an object is not obvious, use a reference such as a ruler or a coin.
• Show any flaws or defects. Point them out in the caption if necessary.
• Don’t use a flash. It causes reflections. Take your photos in open shade or using indirect window light.
• Do not use “stock” photos. Bidders want to see a picture of the actual item they are bidding on, not a scanned photo from a brochure.
• Use a tripod to make sure your shot is sharp.
• Keep your photos to less than 300 pixels. Larger photos take too long to load and impatient bidders will click away from your auction. The “e-mail” setting on most digital cameras works just fine for most auctions.
• Except for flat items such as prints, photos, stamps, cards and so on, scanners often produce an inadequate image for most items. If you don’t have a digital camera, you can now take a 35mm photo to most Kodak processors and they will digitize your images and return them to you on a floppy disk or CD. This will cost just a few dollars more than the processing.
5. Not understanding your costs is a prescription for disaster
It is very easy for a new seller to get caught up in the excitement of selling and not pay attention to the costs involved in selling. Before deciding whether to sell an item on eBay, and what to sell it for (i.e. reserve or Dutch auction price), you need to understand all the costs involved.
First of all there is the “listing fee.” There is also a “selling fee” that will be set by what price the item actually sells for. There may be a fee to process a Billpoint, PayPal or credit card sale. If you use an auction management service such as Vendio or Auctiva then you have their fees. Don’t forget shipping, and the cost of the shipping materials.
If you are selling items you purchased wholesale, were there shipping charges to get it to you? Did you pay sales tax on the item?
Many businesses fail because they are either under financed, or because they do not understand their costs. A program such as “Quick Books” could be one of your best investments. Quick Books will allow you to track every expense, down to the penny, and allocate the costs to different categories so you will fully understand where every dollar is going and if it was well spent.

Good Hair, America Open for Business
Â
Do you know who manufactures your hair care products?
Where did you buy your last hair care product?
African-American men and women spend billions of dollars every year on their hair, consuming more than three-quarters of the hair care products sold in the U.S. How many of those dollars are paid to Black hair care businesses?
For the past twenty years or more, the majority of the wigs, extensions, relaxers, moisturizers, curling irons, hot combs, sheens, gels, conditioners, oils, shampoos, and lotions are brought to you by Korean entrepreneurs. The 2006 investigative documentary film, Black Hair, by Aron Ranen, tracks the successful efforts by Koreans who, recognizing the potential of such a lucrative market, petitioned the U.S. and Korean governments to gain economic incentives for assistance in tapping this gold mine. These shrewd business people have gained control of both the retail market as well as the manufacturing and wholesale distribution.
Applause! Applauding! Thunderous applause! I mean, standing ovation for seeing an opportunity to earn money in America. Encore. Encore. Monopoly â?? pass go; collect billions of Black consumer dollars. America is open for business!
For all yawls out there who are expecting this to be a Korean bashing articleâ?¦not! Stop reading immediately. But, for all yawls out there whoâ??d like to be enlightened about how immigrants from a distant place came to America, stopped, dropped and opened shop in our Black community, do keep reading!
Letâ??s reflect back for a moment upon a brilliant business tycoon: Madame C.J. Walker. Born in 1867, Madame Walker is the undisputed mother of beauty and hair care products for Black women. The Guinness Book of Records cites her as the first female (Black or white) to become a millionaire from her own achievements.
â??Press it outâ? has been a phrase long used in the Black womanâ??s vocabulary to describe the process of removing the kinky curls from her beautiful hair. Madam C.J. Walker saw an economic opportunity in the desire by Black women to straighten their tight curls. Through a unique process of combining raw ingredients, Madame C.J. Walker created superior hair care products to meet the demand within the Black community for â??goodâ? hair.
This early black entrepreneur was neither a biochemist nor an experienced businessperson. Madame Walker lacked the credentials offered by Spellman, Howard, Fisk, Tuskegee, or the host of other Black colleges of her day. She was far too poor to afford college. What Madame Walker did possess was the unique skill of reading what the Black Community wanted enough to pay for again and again. She went about filling that need with goods and servicesâ??all the way the bank. She went right past go, collecting cash from the pockets of Black Haves and Black Have Not consumers alike, to become the wealthiest businesswoman of her era.
Madame C.J. Walker will be forever known as the creator of the â??straightening comb.â? She invented the â??press and curlâ? look for Black woman of her era. With the application of heat to a metal comb, nappy hair became straight hair. The straightening comb was a revolution in Black womenâ??s hair care. Tight curls were releasedâ??freed from the slavery of being matted to sides of her beautiful Black head. Yeah, this writer is from the country, matted (smile). The Black woman was now able to see her beautiful hair flowing and straight as a white womanâ??s for the first time. The wheels of brother necessity were in motionâ??blacksmiths were forming the straightening comb, Madame C.J. Walkerâ??s sales teams were demonstrating and setting up distributorships throughout the Deep South, up north, from the east coast to the west coast. The Black Haves and Black Have Notes were equally desirous of the straightening comb. Word of the combâ??s magic spread like wildfire; the demand out-paced the supply. Thus the battle for the Black hair care market was born. Or, more to the point, the battle for the Black consumer dollar was focused.
Madame Walker saw opportunity there too. She not only sought innovation in the creation of new types of hair care products, but she did so in a way that also created economic opportunities for others in the Black community. Madame Walker provided thousands of Black women with the potential to earn a livable wage and go on to continue to influence the coming generation of Black American entrepreneurs.
The â??goodâ? hair look created by the magic of the hot comb application to black hair turned out to be short-lived. Human sweat and the humidity caused the straightened Black hair to revert and matt back to the sides of the sistersâ?? heads. Plus, the look was a lot of work. There was a new need, for something humidity-proof. A better process to straighten the Black womanâ??s hair was needed with a longer-lasting effect. The creative Madame Walker had an idea, a chemical with a lye baseâ??now known as the modern-day permanent relaxer. The Black male version, conk, was the hot seller of the dayâ??the more modern version was known as the juicy jerry curl. Oh my, when I look back at my graduation pictures.
Fast forward to 2008–the Black communityâ??s hair care preferences and market demand have made possible a multi-billion dollar industry, but the current profits from this industry have been almost entirely pulled out from under the Black community. The seeds of innovation planted by Madame C. J. Walker have somehow been co-opted by Korean entrepreneurs. How has this complete market reversal occurred?
The targeted customer is the sameâ??Black men and women. The business of supplying goods and services to this customer base has evolved with new products, makeup, hair weaves, and wigs. The entire shooting match, including Black hair care magazines, trade shows, and a host of other events, is now dominated by Korean business owners. Ninety percent of the Black hair care business is controlled by Korean entrepreneurs.
Here is how it happened.
As more Koreans immigrated to America, they needed income. For them to stop, drop, and setup shop in white neighborhoods was not permitted. They soon recognized the opportunity that the black consumer presented, particularly within the black hair care market. Just like Madame C. J. Walker, Korean entrepreneurs seized the moment. Now, mind you, they seized it differently. Have I peaked your curiosity? Oh, do read farther.
Madame Walkers seized the moment by aggressively traveling from town to town with product demonstrations in the local churches, ladies clubs, and benevolent societies, recruiting new reps much as Avon does today. The Korean businessperson enlisted the services of the Korean Government, along with the U.S. government. What do I mean by that? Oh, yes, they used new words, strategies, and techniques not available to the late Madame C.J. Walker. Lobbyists, tax incentives, our Small Business Administration, and a host of other skillful tactics were employedâ??all with the purpose and intent to take control of the billion-dollar Black hair care market.
The Black community proved a gold mine for Korean businesses. The Black consumer shopper, often without preference except for lower prices, was their target. We plotted down our hard-earned dollars in stores where the only shared language was the dollar bill at the register. A cryptic sign language was used until the time came to payâ??â??Iâ??ll take this and thatâ? as we pointed to weaves, wigs, and other hair care products. How often do we make mockery of their inability to communicate (the Korean storeowners), as we walk out the door leaving our dollars in their pockets.
Now, please do not misunderstand my intentions. I remind you that this is not about bashing Korean business owners for taking control of our Black hair care market in order to create jobs for their communities, both here and overseas. But, as we seek reparations from past slavery from our government, the Korean-American community prospersâ??with our help. We are a fractional consumer market, with little, if any, loyalty to the concept of buying from Black businesses.
The Korean businessperson has stopped, dropped, and setup shop in our communities with our great assistanceâ??the assistance of our hard-earned Black dollars. The Korean cashiers, the store janitor, the factory workers in Korea, the lobbyist in Washington â?? are all paid for by our communities. Each time you stroll into their store, point to a product on the shelf and hand over your money, you have just handed over your power. The same power could be used to build businesses that employ brothers and sisters.
America is open for business. Korean business owners found our gold mine, a never-ending supply of cash. The Black hair care industry is as lucrative to Korean Americans much as the casino business is for Native Americans. Step right up; drop your coins in the Korean Business slot machine. Oh, but there is no jackpot waiting to come back to you â?? no cash prize for three cherries in row. Oh, this one is always snake eyes, short end of the stick, or any other cliché that suggests â??loser.â?
Are our dollars not sponsoring activities in their communities? Are we not putting their children into the finest of schools, providing their families with jobs, and building wealth for their community? Do you see any of these dollars put back into the Black community? Have you seen the Korean businessperson in the pews of the Black churches on Sunday–perhaps depositing some of those once-Black dollars into the church building fund? Have you ever seen a Korean businessperson acknowledge or sponsor of Juneteenth? Well, letâ??s see â?? some large companies such as Coke and Pepsi have joined the local Black businesses in acknowledging this and other significant dates for Black Americans.
I do not condemn any group for taking advantage of an opportunity for economic success. But maybe it is time for Black Americans to take a closer look at the way we spend our dollars. Is our hair a potential key to opportunities for jobs and growth in the Black community? Koreans stopped, dropped, and setup shop in the Black community all across America â?? America Open for Business. Why donâ??t we stop, drop and set up shop for ourselves?
Note: There are many Black hair care companies such as, Bonner Brothers, Miss Jessies, Dudley Products, and a host of others. A list of Black and non-Black manufacturers of hair care products can be found on the web site for Black Owned Beauty Supply Association (BOBSA) website www.bobsaone.org
The history of Breguet watches
Each thing has its source, Breguet watches are no exception. Breguet Watches are very famous, it has a long history, and now we have to introduce its history
Breguet is a manufacturer of luxury watches, founded by Abraham Louis Breguet in Paris in 1775. Currently part of The Swatch Group, its timepieces are now (since 1976) produced in the Vallée de Joux in Switzerland. Breguet is one of the oldest surviving watch-making establishments and is the pioneer of numerous watch-making technologies, the most notable being the tourbillon, invented by Abraham Louis Breguet. Breguet has recently introduced a line of writing instruments as a tribute to writers who mention or feature Breguet watches in their works. Breguet watches are often easily recognized for their coin-edge cases, guilloché dials and blue pomme hands (often now referred to as ‘Breguet hands’).The history of horology in the 18th century would not be complete without the probably greatest genius of watchmaking that ever lived, Abraham Louis Breguet.
Among his numerous inventions, the best-known are the Breguet spiral, found until today in every quality watch and wristwatch, and the tourbillon, the whirlwind – an ingenious device that Breguet invented to compensate for gravity influences on the balance spring in pocket watches. Among his other inventions were a new striking mechanism for repeaters, a new escapement, the so-called echappement naturel, similar to the chronometer escapement (1789), in 1790, the parachute shock protection system, the cylinder escapement with a ruby cylinder, and improvements of Perrelet’s automatic winding mechanism, implemented in his around forty Perpetuelles.
Furthermore, Breguet made what we consider today as the first Grande Complication in the history of horology, the watch known as the Marie-Antoinette. This watch was commissioned by the French queen’s guard Monsieur de la Croizette with the explicit order that it should contain all known complications and the greatest possible number of parts made of gold. There were no restrictions as to the time for making the watch or the price. This watch was only finished in 1827 which means that neither the unfortunate queen (Marie-Antoinette was guillotined in 1793) nor the master watchmaker himself (Breguet died in 1823) ever saw the completed watch. The Marie-Antoinette was a self-winding watch with a perpetual calendar, equation of time indication and a minute repeater. It has disappeared since 1983 when it was stolen from the Jerusalem Institute of Islamic Art
Breguet watches have high quality. You will never regret to have it

Invest in Youself and Retire Early!!
Growing up we had a 10 gallon fish tank. My father was a wholesale Jewler (Bless his soul) and every week he would bring home a hand full of stones and put them in the bottom of the fish tank. No we did not have gravel we just had different stones like opals, emeralds, rubies, a few diamonds and so on.
We had every possible stone sitting in the bottom of the fish tank and did not think twice about it. You ask why??
Well you see, stones are worthless, the most expensive thing in any jewelry is the precious metal (silver, gold, platinum). No we where not rich, my mother was a stay at home mom and she was taking care of 12 children. The stones in the fish tank where of no value with out the precious metals.
So you have to understand something else, you take a paper dollar bill and hold on to it for a few years. Then you take a silver dollar and hold on to that for a few years. After say 7 years how much is the paper dollar worth? One dollar , Now you take the silver dollar out at the same time and what is that worth? Well its worth more then a dollar because of the precious metal it was made from.
So here is the idea, invest in yourself and future with some precious metals in your portfolio and you will be able to retire earlier then you thought.
I have an example for you, I myself have a 1898 penny and this penny has been in circulation. Right now today the penny is worth 14.50 you can not beat that. Now if I took a silver dollar that has never been in circulation the return on that dollar would be more because the only hands that have touched it where mine. Just some food for thought the next time you want to invest in something. Remember the fish tank story and the jewels.
“Remember if you look in the right direction everything is good in the world.”
